Niches
All of the plants and animals in the Australian Outback have a very important niche. Some of these organisms include:
- The dingo eats reptiles and any food source they can find. When food is running scarce, a group of dingoes may group together to eat larger animals such as kangaroo.
- The numbat consumes termites so that they do not over-populate and potentially harm the ecosystem. Numbats can be consumed by dingoes and hawks or other large birds. The numbat's main predators are the Red Fox and feral cats.
- The platypus feeds mainly on worms, insect larvae, shrimp, and cray fish. It is eaten by snakes and crocodiles among other carnivorous animals.
- The kangaroo eats a range of plants and sometimes fungi. The female kangaroos take care of the young joeys.
